a) u = 0.85*(220-x), l = 0.70*(220-x)
b) u = 170, l = 140
c) u = 153, l = 126
d) u = 0.85*(220-(x+36)) = 0.70*(220-x) = l, where x is the age of the younger woman
156.4 – 0.85x = 154 – 0.7x
2.4 = 0.15x
x=16 This is the younger womans age
16 + 36 = 52 This is the older womans age
heart rate is 142.8

The lower limit of this zone is found by taking 70% of the difference
between 220 and your age.
Change the words to an equation:
(220 – x) * .70 = l
(220 – x) * .85 = u
plug in 20 and 40 for x in the above to get b and c.
for c, let x = younger woman. her formula is then
(220 – x) * .70 = l
the other woman is 36 years older, so her formula is
(220 – (x+36)) * .85 = u
set the two equations equal to each other and solve for x.
